Spring 2014 RTW Shows: Cushnie et Ochs, and Rag & Bone

Cushnie et Ochs Spring 2014

We know Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs, of Cushnie et Ochs, excel at creating sexy skin-tight, angular cut-out dresses. They've created a renowned signature based on these detailed dresses, celebrities - Selena Gomez, Katie Couric, Eva Longoria - and even the First Lady have been a fan of. They seek ways to take sexiness to a new modern level, but they may now be getting tired of people portraying them as the simple 'sexy cut-out dress' brand.

It was not so much the case anymore as we saw at their new Spring 2014 presentation. They stepped into newer territories that haven't been particularly familiar to the brand, but were invigoratingly sexy and lustrous to watch.

Their new collection derived from 'straight jackets and strapping details,' as the designers pointed out. "Lots of belting, binding, and slices of skin," were more than enough to see the designers taking details to another chapter in the brand. Karlie Kloss opened the show with a white skin-exposed (waist and upper shoulder) dress strapped by elastic that referenced to those hems in jacket. Seamless knitwear pieces made a strong entrance here. It was interesting to also have seen them put a noteworthy effort in their pants. It showed everyone they too are capable of making a great white crispy-ribbed pant look sexy in all its form; another favorite was a black buckled detailed pant. Prints made a second appearance that also put them on the spotlight of innovation. And their expansion of sexy one-piece (one white buckled detailed piece was everything), and two-piece swimsuits were another big score for the duo.

Other fabrics - sheer, snakeskin, and silk - expanded the choice of their signature viscose fabric. It was just not about sexy, exposed body-hugging silhouettes anymore, but refined sensuality. Colors - white, gray, light brown, purple, and black - may still have been of few color palettes, but felt high-end designer without a doubt. If the designers were taking new action into their label, and judging from this collection, one can't disagree they're going along the right path to a bigger success. Can we pre-order now?

Rag & Bone designers, David Neville and Marcus Wainwright, seemed to have shifted their tomboy signature looks into a more feminine yet youthful approach. The brand has been popular among young teenagers for quite a while, but not as much amongst editors and fashion critics. At this point of their career, the designers know who their main clients are, and it was obvious who their Spring 2014 womenswear collection was made for.

The new collection had way more feminine pastel colors that could be a sensation next season - peach, turquoise, crisp whites, lavender, pink - and of course, black. It was interesting to have seen them take on more silky and flow-y fabrics that looked cool as the models walked down the runway. Last season (fall 2013), the duo took the crown with their menswear inspired fabrics, which was an easy task, given that the designers English tailoring techniques make up part of their label. This season though was more about relaxed tailoring, but kinky, when it came to those cropped leather tops, dropped v-neck sweaters, sheer polos, and spaghetti strap slip-dresses. And when it came to their slouchy-fitted colored pants and blazers, you know  a number of young girls would die for one of these.

Day 2 of London Collection: Men's Best Spring/Summer 2014

Vibe: Guy Lookin Fly
Rag & Bone is better known for mixing its American sportswear vibe with its English tailoring roots. One couldn't have thought both sides could turn out to give the brand that clean, fresh, and urban-ish appeal we like to see designers, Marcus Wainwright and David Neville perform. They've been nominated several times as best Menswear designers of the year, and the structural detailed designs like their most recent spring 2014 collection explains everything. They know how to cut a pair a jeans perfectly well, as well as making a pair of pants the most unique of them all. Their white relaxed pants were one to pay close attention at all details. Special were the ones with a small black button in the bottom end of the crotch area, or an extra pocket lowered down along the legs. What were really sharply man tailored were their shorts - great to pair with a favorite blazer, jacket, or t-shirt in any occasion that calls for them. The best numbers here we'd have to say were their crisp white, gray, and dark navy shirt jackets. Three nice pieces - short, jacket, and shirt - in floral prints also made an entrance.

Vibe: Fluorescent Tailored Gentlemen
Sleek silhouettes are what best describe Sir Richard James designs when it comes to menswear tailoring. But what the others do in craftsmanship and design, he does it color, something that doesn't come to mind quite often when he says his a Savile Row tailor. If you have not already figured it out, you may have already seen this designer favors using his talent to give his clothes a much different spin on sartorial looks. Take for example his special espadrilles designs - flower stamped. Speaking about special, one specific polo shirt - pink fading into a lighter see-thru purple - was a shirt to be admired by. Being Sir James part of the Savile Row town, his hot orange, sky blue, and white trousers were unsurprisingly cut well. One thing we know for sure is that sartorial and color can make any men much more happier like Sir Richard James spring/summer 2014 collection.

Vibe: The Boy in the 3D Face Diagram
Christopher Kane can be quirky with some of his designs, but you can't deny you want to try on all his ultra cool t-shirts. Kane's spring/summer 2014 men's print collection was no exception to let go of. He made frankenstein popular, and now it may be 3D diagram man's turn to test popularity. A fluorescent yellow 3D diagram sweater spoke for itself. His black pants seemed to be cut well, and as far as white goes, he made this color much more cooler in these prints. Perhaps this particular white 3D ensemble could become a hot streestyle trend in menswear. Overall, Kane seems to be making his quirky cool prints a signature of the house become beloved by many.

Men's LFW Spring 2014 Schedule is Official. So, Will We Ever Get a Men's NYFW Schedule?

London is getting ready to began its official 3 day fashion week dedicated purely to men's fashion. It's created quite a buzz for many in the fashion world. What's so important about this three day event though? Well, what's interesting is that London has become the third capital of the fashion world to announce a menswear fashion show full of only men's designers. We know Milan and Paris are not only a fashion capital known for its womenswear collections, but also for its prestigious menswear collections. London has begun to follow the lead of the other capitals. If you are familiar at all with London Fashion Week, you would know it is the capital of what I like to describe as "Innovative Beginners." Many of us forget to look at the creative designers that London has to offer, especially in men's fashion. I bet you are sure to find extraordinarily hidden boutiques that pride in the best sartorial craftsmanship.

This is why several new and international designers have made sure to make the Men's LFW schedule much more interesting. Rag & Bone, who are actually an English brand, have moved their presentation from Milan to London for their next men's Spring 2014 collection. Burberry, who is one of the most internationally recognized English brands, have also decided to join the Spring 2014 Men's LFW calendar event. Even Dolce & Gabbana (Italian), who were asked a month ago if they were willing to join in this special event, were pleased to accept the invitation. They will have the honor of officially opening Men's Spring 2014 LFW with a presentation of their summer 2014 tailoring collection and store debut. Jimmy Choo, Paul Smith, Alexander McQueen, Tom Ford, and others have also joined the list.
Who knows, maybe London's three day menswear event may soon turn into an official fashion week separated into menswear and womenswear? For now, the schedule that was released looks quite interesting to begin with, but the other big question is this. If London, Milan, and Paris are going to offer both men's and women's shows, will New York become the next capital of the world to even all things out with only a menswear fashion week?

There are menswear collections during NYFW, but it only interferes with what most of us are assigned to see - women's runway collections. They don't give much of an opportunity for new menswear designers to be looked at or others, because were too busy analyzing other clothes. That being said, maybe a NYFW menswear calendar should be taken into consideration. Make the event happen during the first week of June, and then let it lead to London? Yes, it may take time to make the calendar fair for everyone, but one thing for sure is that profits and new talents could become more recognizable.

Check out the official Men's London Fashion Week Schedule here, which will began June 16-18. Check back here soon for the coverage.

Spring/Summer 2013 Trends - 5. Exceptional Bermuda Shorts

Alexander Wang Spring 2013
Alexander Wang Spring/Summer 2013

Spring/Summer 2013 could not be anything without shorts. This spring think top notch Bermuda shorts. The menswear inspired trend has been greater than ever, and just about any street style girl is eager to rock the look. Alexander Wangs shorts were no doubt in the zone, delivering those tough deconstructed shorts anyone would be willing to wear to stay at the peak of its trend. DKNY presented a modern interpretation of the denim short, resembling those of past culottes, yet making the look flow with ease.  Nicholas K, first to open New York Fashion Week as usual, gave a semi-draped feel to the camel colored shorts. Others such as Rag & Bone, remained at the top with its tender blue Bermudas fit for most ladies.
